What Would a Real Life Barbie Look Like?

The first Barbie was created in 1959. Barbie's full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts. Barbie started out brunette and soon changed to a blonde. Barbie's officail birthday is March 9, 1959 the day Barbie made her debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York City.

Denise Winterman from BBC News Magzine published an article in regards to what Barbie would look like in real life. So what if you scaled Barbie up to human proportions?

Denise Winterman says:

"Barbie Millicent Roberts is a woman with a very controversial reputation and mostly it stems from her long legs, tiny waist, ample bosom, slender neck and flowing blonde locks.
Some argue her body shape would be unobtainable and unsustainable if scaled up to life-size. They claim she would not be able to stand up because her body frame would be so unbalanced. A real life Barbie would simply fall over."

Do the Math

The vital statistics the BCC News Magazine was left with:

-Bust 4.6ins (11.6cm)
-Waist 3.5ins (8.9cm), and
-Hips 5ins (12.7cm)

Next apply Barbie's proportions to a real human body.

How many people do you think are photoshopped? It happens all the time!"

Photoshop Outrage

There is much debate over advertisers and fashion magazines using photographs of women that have been retouched or altered, by the photo editing software called Photoshop.

In this particular Ralph Lauren advertisement it shows model, Filippa Hamilton, so distorted from the use of Photoshop her waist appears to be smaller than her head.

Is this what fashion and entertainment editors want women to believe is beautiful? Is her body image truly ideal?

Photoshop not only misleads women’s perspective of beauty and their personal appearance goals, but it creates unrealistic expectations for women. Many times this may lead to a disordered eating habit.

Exposure to the thin-body ideals, like this advertisment leads to temporary decreases in a woman’s self esteem and increases in body and weight dissatisfaction, depression and anxiety.
